Steve Bacon - "A Very Lucky Sailor - The Merchant Navy in WW2"
The Talk: This is such an enormous subject, with whole books written on single convoy actions, that this talk seeks to personalise the story. It is, in part, based on some of the experiences of my father-in-law, who seems to have been a very lucky sailor, but also includes the experiences of other named sailors as well as two U-boat commanders one of whom managed to sink one of my father-in-law’s ships. Learn more about the war in the Atlantic and the advances that ultimately managed to defeat the U-boat threat.
About the Speaker: Steve has been researching the life of a WW2 Merchant Navy officer: Eve Bacon’s father. He was a merchant seaman during the 2nd World War and he had one or two close calls.
