Paul Johnson - "Beyond The Grave - The War Widows"
The Talk: Military historian and author Paul Johnson reveals the stories that lie behind the names carved upon our war memorials—the stories of the families left behind. This presentation explores the often-overlooked experiences of war widows and the profound, lasting impact that military loss had upon their lives.
Beginning with a brief overview of the historical treatment of soldiers’ widows, the talk traces the development of financial assistance, pensions and public attitudes towards women whose husbands died in military service. Its principal focus, however, is upon the widows of the First and Second World Wars, when hundreds of thousands of women were suddenly forced to rebuild their lives following the death of a husband.
Drawing upon contemporary records, personal accounts and individual stories, the presentation examines the facts and myths surrounding war widows, including the financial hardships many endured, the regulations governing their pensions and the expectations placed upon them by society. It also considers subjects rarely discussed, including remarriage, the loss of pensions, social stigma and the challenges of raising families alone.
Above all, this is a story of ordinary women whose lives were forever changed by war—individuals whose own sacrifices continued long after the guns had fallen silent.
About the Speaker: Paul Johnson is a recognised military historian, researcher and author, who has published a number of books covering various aspects of both the First and Second World Wars. He is also Lead Historian for the Herts at War project. He has studied many facets of both wars but prefers to focus on the human element, the personal stories. A battlefield tourist and occasional guide, Paul has worked as an historical consultant and contributor for both television, radio and projects of national remembrance.
