The Herts at War Project makes an exciting return to the Battlefields of the Western Front with our 2022 Battlefield Tour - Our Back to Boots on the Ground Tour - a tour led by an expert Battlefield Guides and Historians: Dan Hill and Paul Johnson. The tour follows men from Hertfordshire and covers aspects of both the First & Second World Wars, on the ground and in the air.

Day One: Friday 23rd September
Picking up in Hertfordshire, we travel to France via the Euro-Tunnel, we lunch in Arras before learning about Hertfordshire Soldiers at the Battle of Arras (1917), including Lieutenant Meredith Magniac and Private Robert Holder. Then A Daring Life - Hertfordshire Airmen of the Great War with a visit to the Arras Flying Services Memorial situated in the grounds of the Arras Memorial and Faubourg-d'Amiens Cemetery, Arras. There will be some time to explore the memorial and cemetery before travelling on to our hotel and then, after settling in, an evening at leisure when you may wish to see Arras and dine.
Day Two: Saturday 24th September
A full day in the Somme covering: the Attack on Pozieres by 6th Bedfordshire Regiment 15 July 1916, in which at least 20 Hertfordshire men were lost. Then, at and near Thiepval, the Pioneers - Hertfordshire Men with the Glosters on the Somme, including a short walk Walk to the Schwaben Redoubt (Mill Road Cemetery), then to Ulster Tower via Connaught Cemetery. Later we travel to Foncquevillers where - Disaster Strikes the Hertfordshire Regiment - A Gas Attack – Foncquevillers 1918 and then back to Arras to eat out as you wish.
Day Three: Sunday 25th September
The last day, but full of interest! En-route home we visit the WW2 sites of the Massacres at Le Paradis, Massacres at Wormhoudt, the BEF HQ - Cassel (WW1) and we visit the important WW2 sites of the Dunkirk Memorial to the Missing, the Beach Memorial with a Mole Walk.
