Advanced Research Help
Adding depth to the men’s biographies using more advanced research methods available via some or all the following:
- Genealogy websites - Census, service and other military records, family details, Du Ruvigny, National Roll of The Great War etc.
- Internet – Finding existing research which we might be able to share, e.g. family history, a photograph, details of the battles in which a man died etc.
- Official websites - For soldiers from the empire, e.g. Library and Archives Canada, Australian War Memorial etc.
- Newspapers – Researching articles appearing in the local newspapers
- Regimental War Diaries – Giving perspective to the man’s likely military experiences and more details of his death
- The 1918 Absent Voters List – Checking for missing names in our records
The Men & Women Who Served & Survived

The Memorials and Headstones (UK)
- Memorials not yet listed by the HAW project - If our records are not complete and you know of any missing memorials, even if they duplicate names on others, please let us know. Memorials which are not yet known to us may list different or additional names and may exist as additional memorials to the other town or village memorials and are often found in churches, schools, village halls, places of work such as factories, banks and occasionally at some street locations. If found please tell us:
- Its location, so that others can find it?
- Does it list names of men that died?
- Does it list names of men who survived?
- Do they exist? - Confirmation of whether some memorials listed exist or not and if found please tell us giving any information you have, especially its location
It is best to combined this with the photography mentioned above, and a transcription of the names.
The Memorials and Headstones (Abroad)
If you visit cemeteries or memorials while abroad (usually in France and Belgium) why not take some photographs for us? We need general photographs of all memorials and cemeteries and relevant headstones. We can usually supply details of relevant headstones where known. Contact Us.
- Transferring the information to HAW website from Word or Excel templates
- Checking or adding details to existing records form specific sources, e.g. service medals received, headstone inscriptions etc.
- Identifying duplication between memorial names
- For locations with large numbers of names, form or join a team to share the load
There are a number of downloadable guides and templates available to help, more will be produced if a need is identified. A complete list of those currently available can be found via the links below.
If you need specific help or wish to suggest a guide that is needed, please get in touch.
Please Note: Inevitably some of the linked guides are quite large and may take a few minutes to progress and download. If you have any problems, contact us.
