Jim Nicolson - "The Lost Battalion"
The Talk: On the evening of 2nd October 1918, Maj. Charles Whittlesley led a force of 442 men into the narrow, muddy Charlevaux ravine, in the Argonne Forest of France at least a mile in front of the main American forces. That night they were cut off and surrounded by the Germans and attacked almost continuously for the next five days and nights, a total of 123 hours.
On 7th October the 194 survivors stumbled out of the ravine, having been rescued and into American military history and folklore.
About the Speaker: Jim is a keen student of the Great War with a special interest in The Somme. Often takes groups to that area and elsewhere.
