Dr Richard Marks - "Iron Dragons: British Tanks in the First World War"
The Talk: By 1916 the Western Front had ground to a halt, trench warfare being the only option left to both sides. We will look at how a new approach was developed to break the deadlock in France and Belgium which resulted in the creation of a key military asset familiar to everyone today, the tank. We will look at how the British developed the tank and also how local people experienced working in these early behemoths.
About the Speaker: Richard is a freelance professional historian residing in Berkshire, specialising in industrial, military, and railway history, as well as the history of science.
