Pre War

*1 The St Albans Cathedral Diocese records record two ‘Alfred Smiths’ with a connection to Chorleywood; one a Private in the Hampshire Regiment and the other a Sergeant in the Corps of Royal Engineers. These men have not been identified; however other records identify an ‘Albert John Smith’ was a Sergeant in the Royal Engineers and his wife’s address was recorded as Chorleywood and an ‘Arnold Bradley Wood was a Private in the Hampshire Regiment and he lived in Chorleywood’

So, while we are not certain, we think that the references to both Alfred Smith may be incorrect and we have assumed the above to be the men intended to be commemorated in the Diocese records.
