Pre War
Thomas Lee was born in Ashwell, Herts in 1879, the son of James and Emily Lee (nee Hills) and one of six children and was educated at the Merchant Taylor's School in Ashwell.
On the 1881 Census the family were living at High Street, Ashwell, where his father was working as an agricultural labourer. They remained in Ashwell in 1891, then living at Quarry Cottage. His parents were living in Ashwell in 1901 but Thomas was then a boarder at the home of his older brother John and his wife Charlotte at 28 Riles Road, West Ham, Essex and was working as a wharf labourer. He had returned to Ashwell by 1911, living with his parents at Workhouse Yard and working as a farm labourer.
His parents later lived at West End, Ashwell.
Wartime Service
He enlisted on 10 March 1916 and joined the Bedfordshire Regiment, initially with the reg. no. 6454, later transferring to the Army Service Corps and serving with 142nd Company, 16th Division, Transport.
He died from disease on 11 July 1920, aged 41, in Ware Hospital, Herts, and is buried in New Cemetery, Ashwell.
Additional Information
Pension cards exist with his mother as dependant. The amount received is not clear but is likely to be 5 shillings a week.
His brother William also served and survived the war.
*1 The St Mary’s Church Roll of Honour, Ashwell, incorrectly lists Thomas as surviving.
