Biography

He had been born in Cambridgeshire and resided in Essex. He held Service Number 311894 and was serving with the 113th Regiment (2/5th West Yorks) at the time of his death though the circumstances are not known except that he died at sea.

The date of his death and the place of commemoration would seem to indicate that he was on his way to take part in Operation Husky which was the invasion of Sicily. However, if the stated age is correct it is unlikely that he was involved in active combat.

He is remembered on Panel I, Column 2 of the Brookwood Memorial in the United Kingdom.

He was the husband of Mrs R E. Nightingale of Hitchin.
