(Gwyn) John Gwinnett FAITHFULL was born in Lambeth/Brixton, London, in 1885, the son of John Barton Faithfull a Ship Broker and Gertrude Gwinnett Faithfull (nee Green). The eldest of two children.


His parents were married on 16th April 1884, at All Saints Church, Clapham Park, Lynam Road, Lambeth, London.


John Jr. was Baptised on 3rd June 1885, at St Jude’s Church, East Brixton, London.


1891 Census records John Jr. aged 5 living with his parents and brother Francis (4) at 1 Gresham Villas, Southchurch Road, Mundon, Rochford, Essex.


His father John Snr. died in the early part of 1894, aged 38.


He married Alice Grace Errington, the daughter of James and Alice Errington, on 31st June 1909, at Saint Stephen’s Church, Twickenham. They went on to have two children Joan Errington Faithfull (B 1911) and Patience Gwinnett Faithfull (B 1913).


1911 Census records John Jr. married to Grace, and they have a daughter Joan aged one month, living at 117 Rusthall Avenue, Acton Green, Middx. His sister-in-Law Dorothy Errington, a Hospital Nurse is living with them. His occupation is given as a Secretary and Director in a Private Limited Company.

Wartime Service

No Military records for Lieutenant John Gwinnett Faithfull were found, other than, a John Gwinnett Faithfull was Gazetted Temp 2nd Lieutenant on 18th April 1918, and Temp Lieutenant on 21st August 1918, to the County of London Regiment. 

Additional Information

His headstone in St Augustine’s Churchyard, Broxbourne, Herts, reads: "To The Beautiful Memory of Gwyn John Gwinnett Faithfull Who Gave His Life For His Fellow men on February 13, 1919, Aged 33 Years Greater Love Hath No Man Than This"
