Pre War

William Fyfe Anderson was born on 29 May 1891 at Broughtyferry, Scotland, the son of George and Ann Anderson.

The family were living at Cliff Lodge, Inverkeithing, Scotland on the 1901 Census.

Wartime Service

William enlisted in St Albans and joined the Bedfordshire Regiment as Private 14176, serving in France with the 2nd Battalion from 17 March 1915. He was killed in action on 12 October 1916 during the Battle of the Somme but has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.

Additional Information

His father received a war gratuity of £9 and pay owing of £11 12s 1d, His brother Frederick also received a payment of 17s 10d from pay owing.

N.B. Although the St Albans Cathedral Diocese records state that this soldier is William 'E' Anderson, and he served in the Bedfordshire Regiment, no William E Anderson has been found on CWGC records who served with that Regiment, however William Fyfe Anderson served with the Bedfordshire Regiment and enlisted in St Albans, possibly working in the area at the time of enlistment. It is possible that the F was mis-transcribed as an E in documentation.
