John Duncombe (Duncom) was born in Lambeth, Surrey, in 1869, the son of Henry and Ellen Duncombe and was baptised on 7 October 1870.


On the 1871 Census the family were living at The Wilderness, Great Berkhamsted, where his father was working as a labourer. They had moved to Ellesmere Road, Northchurch, by 1881.


By the time of the 1891 Census John had moved to Hertford and was a lodger at the home of James and Mary Dellar at 6 Water Lane, where his occupation was described as a Private, Beds Militia, (he had enlisted in November 1890). Three other soldiers were also lodging there.


He married Mary Ann Bignell on 12 March 1900 in Great Berkhamsted and on the Census the following year, John and his wife were living at  9 Upper Kings Road, Berkhamsted where he was working as a bricklayer's labourer. 


On the 1911 Census he was living with his wife and four children at 3 Norris Terrace, Berkhamsted. His occupation was given as general labourer. 

Wartime Service

Having been a member of the Militia,  John was recalled at the outbreak of war and enlisted in October 1914 in Hertford and was posted to serve with the 1st Battalion, Hertfordshire Regiment under reg. no. 3914 on 14 October.


He served at home until 24 December 1914 having been discharged as medically unfit on 23 December 1914.


He died, aged 45. on 4 March 1915 from a paralytic stroke and pneumonia. His resting place is unknown. 

Additional Information

His widow received a pension of £1 8s 9d a week. The home address was listed as 94 Gossoms End, Berkhamsted on pension cards
