Pre War
Son of William George and the late Ann (nee WHYBROW) YOUNG.
His parent’s marriage is proving elusive. Ann died 1912 in Watford aged 45, and was buried 25 March in Vicarage Road Cemetery, Watford; William died 1929 in the Watford district aged 68.
Charles was born 1890 in Watford, and baptised 16 April 1890 at St Mary’s, Watford.
On the 1891 Census, aged 1 he lived in Watford, with his parents and two siblings. On the 1901 Census, aged 11 he still lived in Watford, with his parents and five siblings. On the 1911 Census, he is proving elusive; however there is a return for a family named GROVES who match exactly – Charles is a golf labourer aged 20 living in Watford, with his parents and seven siblings.
Wartime Service
He enlisted in Watford; was entitled to the Victory and British War medals, and was killed in action.
Additional Information
Unfortunately, Charles’ Service Record appears to be one that did not survive the World War Two bombing. Recorded on the Memorial as 7th Battalion. *1 Records found have recorded his birthplace as Watford. This may be the case, however Watford was the main postal location given for nearby villages and hamlets, so it may be that this information is misleading. If more accurate information found this will be updated.
