Son of Emma (formerly YERRILL) STEARN; husband of Louisa (nee LANGHAM) YERRILL of Watford.

Joseph was born 1884 in Soho, London, and married 2 January 1909 at St Andrew’s, Watford; they had three children.  Louisa never remarried, she died 1950 in Watford aged 74, and was buried 17 November in Vicarage Road Cemetery, Watford.

His mother married John STEARN 1915 in the Cambridge district, and died 1941 in the Cambridge district aged 81; she was buried 15 July in Cambridge Cemetery.

On the 1891 Census, a scholar aged 8 he lived in East Barnwell, Cambs, with his mother and four siblings.  On the 1901 Census, he is proving elusive.  On the 1911 Census, a draper’s porter aged 29, he lived in Watford, with his wife and one child.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Watford, and was formerly Private 35167 Suffolk Regiment.  

He was entitled to the Victory and British War medals, and was killed in action.  

Additional Information

Unfortunately, Joseph’s Service Record appears to be one that did not survive the World War Two bombing.

The National Roll of the Great War gives his date of death as 29 April 1917
