Pre War

Son of William and Rosalind/Rosalina Sarah (nee WOODLAND) WINTER.

His parents married 1889 in the St Alban’s, Herts, district.  Rosalind died 1920 in the Watford district aged 68; William died 1923 in the St Alban’s district aged 74.

Henry was born 14 January 1891 in St Alban’s, and attended Callowland Board School, Watford, from 7 March 1898 to 20 January 1905.

On the 1891 Census, aged 2 months he lived in St Alban’s, with his mother and no siblings.  On the 1901 Census, aged 10 he lived in Watford, with his parents and no siblings.  On the 1911 Census, a boot salesman aged 20, he still lived in Watford, with his parents and no siblings.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Brighton, Sussex; was entitled to the Victory and British War medals, and died of wounds received in action.

Additional Information

Unfortunately, Henry’s Service Record appears to be one that did not survive the World War Two bombing.

There is an article about and a Death announcement for Henry in the West Herts and Watford Observer dated 31 August 1918.
