Pre War

Son of Thomas Henry and Edith (nee ATKINS) WARE of Watford.

His parents married 22 May 1893 at St Mary’s, Aylesbury, Bucks.  Thomas possibly died 1930 in the Lewisham, Kent, district aged 61; Edith died 21 March 1932 in Hounslow, Middx, aged 62.

Rowland was born 4 March 1893 in Watford, and attended first Callowland Infants’ School, Watford; then Callowland Board School from 1 January 1901 to 11 April 1902, when he transferred to Alexandra School, Watford, from 14 April 1902 to 10 December 1903 [sic], before returning to Callowland from 7 January 1903 [sic] to 14 March 1908.

On the 1901 Census, aged 7 he lived in Watford, with his parents and three siblings.  On the 1911 Census, aged 17 he still lived in Watford, with his parents and five siblings.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Watford, and was possibly formerly Private 1607 Hertfordshire Regiment.

He was entitled to the Victory, British War and 1914-15 Star medals, his qualifying date being 10 July 1915, and died of wounds received in action.

Additional Information

Unfortunately, Roland’s Service Record appears to be one that did not survive the World War Two bombing. There is a brief article about and a Death announcement for Roland in the West Herts and Watford Observer dated 11 August 1917; another Death announcement in the issue dated 18 August 1917; plus an In Memoriam in the issue dated 3 August 1918. Recorded as serving in the East Suffolk Regiment [which didn't exist] in the Borough Roll of Honour.
