Pre War

Son of James and Louisa Elizabeth (nee WEST) STACEY. One of twelve children two died in childhood, William (Born 1883), James (B 1884), Harry (B 1885), Bertha (B 1886), Sarah (B 1888), Frederick (B 1893), Arthur (B 1895), Nellie (B 1899), and Albert (B 1902).

His parents married 8 May 1882 at St Mary’s, Willesden, London.  Louisa died 1918 in the Leicester district aged 60.

John was born 24 March 1889 at Thame (Lewknor), Oxon [however, there is no trace of a John STACEY born there and then, but there is a Stephen STACEY], and attended first Beechen Grove Infants’ School (Red Lion Infants School), Watford; then Beechen Grove Board School from 23 January 1895 to 12 February 1901.  

On the 1891 Census, Stephen aged 2 lived in Watford, with his parents and five siblings.  On the 1901 Census, [Stephen] still lived in Watford – 33 Cannon Road, with his parents and six siblings.  

In January 1904, he enlisted in the Militia for 6 years, to the 4th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment, with the service number 4783. Giving his age as 17 years and address 35, Cannon Road, Watford Fields, Watford, and occupation Labourer.

He possibly emigrated 29 August 1907 aboard the Dominion Line Canada Liverpool to Quebec: a labourer aged 19 and on the 1911 Canadian Census, [John] aged 22 lived in St Malachie d’Ormstoun, Quebec.

Wartime Service

He originally attested for the Militia 12 January 1904, no. 4782 (or 4783 – needs confirming) 4th Bedfordshire Regiment: a labourer, C of E, of Watford, aged 17, 5’5½” tall. 

 

He re-attested 22 September 1914 at Valcartier in the 4th Battalion, Canadian Infantry, (1st Central Ontario Regiment). Aged 25, single, a Farmer, and next of kin given as his mother Louisa Stacey, living in Leicester, England. |He was recorded as a farmer aged 25, 5’11” tall, C of E; next-of-kin his mother of Leicester.

 

He obtained the rank of Corporal. [John] was killed in action on 26th May 1916, he is buried in the CWGC Chester Farm Cemetery in Belgium.

Additional Information

There is an article about John in the West Herts and Watford Observer dated 5 August 1916. His effects were left to his mother Louisa Stacey. Both his service records (1904 & 1914) can be found on the internet. His brother James died 18 April 1918 and also features on Watford Borough Roll of Honour.
