His parents married 1885 in the St Olave, London, district. Walter died 1940 aged 84 and was buried 11 April in Camberwell New Cemetery, London; Annie died 1950 aged 85, and was buried 25 April, also in Camberwell New Cemetery.
Clifford was born 21 September 1892 in Dulwich.
On the 1901 Census, aged 8 he lived in Dulwich with his parents and six siblings. On the 1911 Census, a Stoker 2nd Class aged 18, he was aboard H.M.S. Irresistible stationed at Glengarriff, Ireland.
Wartime Service
He originally enlisted 28 September 1910 for 12 years: an office boy 5’3″ tall, and joined H.M.S. Pembroke II as a Stoker 2nd Class. He was aboard H.M.S. Blonde when promoted to Stoker 1st Class 16 November 1911. He joined H.M.S. Aboukir 18 June 1913, and was drowned in the North Sea when Aboukir was sunk by the German submarine U-9; 527 men of her compliment died. His body was not recovered for burial; his mother was notified of his death. He was entitled to the Victory, British War and 1914 Star medals.
