Son of Benjamin and Alice Frances (nee NYE) MALLETT of North Mymms, Herts.

His parents married 15 August 1889 at St Giles’, Camberwell, London.  Benjamin died 29 May 1950 in Stevenage, Herts, aged 86; Alice died 25 November 1947 in St Alban’s, Herts, aged 86.

John was born 15 May 1894 in North Mymms, and baptised 25 November 1894 at St Mary’s, North Mymms. He attended Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School, Barnet, Herts, from 26 June 1905, and St Alban’s School. He played football for St Alban’s “Old Boys” and was a brilliant pianist and organist. He resided in North Mimms.

On the 1901 Census, aged 6 he lived in North Mymms, with his parents and two siblings. On the 1911 Census, a bank clerk aged 16 he still lived in North Mymms, with his parents and three siblings.

Wartime Service

He enlisted September 1914 in Hertford, and proceeded to France 5 November 1914. He was wounded at Cuinchy in April 1915, and returned to the trenches the following month.


He was entitled to the Victory, British War and 1914 Star medals, his qualifying date being 6 November 1914, and was killed in action at Festubert. 

Additional Information

Unfortunately, John’s Service Record appears to be one that did not survive the World War Two bombing.
