Son of James and Martha Jane (nee TAYLOR) GREEN; husband of Annie (nee LANGSTON) GREEN.
His parents married 21 September 1884 at St Ann’s, Bagshot, Surrey.
Robert was born 8 August 1888 in St Alban’s, Herts(*1), and attended first Callow Land Infants’ School, Watford; then Callowland Board School from 27 January 1896 to 1 August 1901. He married 11 April 1914 at St Matthew’s, Pontypridd, and resided in Watford. Annie possibly never remarried, and died 1972 in the Pontypridd district aged 89.
On the 1891 Census, aged 2 he lived in Sandridge, Herts, with his parents and four siblings. On the 1901 Census, aged 12 he lived in Watford, with his parents and three siblings. On the 1911 Census, a house painter aged 22, he still lived in Watford, with his parents and three siblings.
Wartime Service
He attested 11 December 1915 in Pontypridd for Short Service (for the Duration of the War): a painter and paper hanger aged 27, 6′ tall, of Watford.
He was mobilised 18 September 1916 at Cardiff, as Private 4943 2/2nd Battalion, Monmouthshire Regiment.
He was transferred 20 October 1916 to the Royal Defence Corps, transferred 29 December 1916 back to the Monmouthshire Regiment, and posted 20 March 1917 to the Base Depot, France.
He was entitled to the Victory and British War medals, and was reported missing in France 12 April 1918. The Army Council decided this man to be regarded for official purposes as having died on or shortly after 12 April 1918.
Additional Information
There is an article about Robert in the West Herts and Watford Observer dated 1 June 1918. *1 Records found have recorded his birthplace as St Albans. This may be the case, however St Albans was the main postal location given for nearby villages and hamlets, so it may be that this information is misleading. If more accurate information found this will be updated.
