Son of the late Thomas and Anne (nee PREECE) GREEN; husband of Lily May (nee EWER) GREEN of Watford.
His parents married 6 February 1865 at St Nicholas’, Hereford. Thomas died 1883 in the Leominster, Heref, district aged 44; Anne died 1893 in the Hereford district aged 53.
James was born 1879 in Stoke Prior, Heref, and married 23 February 1909 at St Mary’s, Watford; they had three children. He resided in Watford. Lily never remarried.
On the 1881 Census, aged 2 he lived in Stoke Prior, with his parents and five siblings. On the 1891 Census, aged 12 he still lived in Stoke Prior, with his widowed mother and two siblings. On the 1901 Census, a brewer’s drayman aged 22, he lived in Watford, with his brother. On the 1911 Census, a carman aged 30, he still lived in Watford, with his wife and one child.
Recorded as born in Stoke Prior, Hereford and was living in Watford when he enlisted there.
Wartime Service
He enlisted in Watford, and was formerly Private G/41445 Royal Fusiliers.
He was entitled to the Victory and British War medals, and was killed in action.
Additional Information
*1 We have found two men named James W Green and Joseph Green both have a direct connection to Watford. Currently it seems, because of the middle initial and first name, that only the former appears on the memorials, and we have listed them that way, however with the similarity, this may not be entirely accurate. There is an article about and a Death announcement for James in the West Herts and Watford Observer dated 19 May 1917; plus In Memoriams in the issues dated 13 April 1918 and 19 April 1919. Has a entry in the National Roll of the Great War. Unfortunately, James’ Service Record appears to be one that did not survive the World War Two bombing.
