Son of George and Mary Ann (nee KINGHAM) CARPENTER of Watford.
His parents married 25 December 1869 at St James’, Bushey, Herts. Mary died 1920 in Watford aged 70 and was buried 19 July in Vicarage Road Cemetery, Watford; George died 1923 in Watford aged 77, and was buried 20 March, also in Vicarage Road Cemetery.
James was born 1883 in Watford, and baptised 21 September 1883 at St Mary’s, Watford. He resided in Watford.
On the 1891 Census, aged 7 he lived in Watford, with his parents and eight siblings. On the 1901 Census, a carpenter’s labourer aged 17, he still lived in Watford, with his parents and four siblings. On the 1911 Census, a Lance-Corporal in the 2nd Battalion, Royal Berkshire Regiment, he was stationed in Meerut, India.
Wartime Service
He enlisted in London; was entitled to the Victory, British War and 1914 Star medals, his qualifying date being 6 November 1914, and was killed in action.
Additional Information
There is an article about and a Death announcement for James in the West Herts and Watford Observer dated 3 April 1915; plus an In Memoriam in the issue dated 18 March 1916. Unfortunately, James’ Service Record appears to be one that did not survive the World War Two bombing.
