Pre War

Son of Mary Ann (nee HOBBS) BUTTON of Watford, and the late Henry BUTTON.

His parents married 10 October 1881 at St Matthew’s, Camden, London.  Henry died 1903 in Watford aged 56, and was buried 16 July in Vicarage Road Cemetery, Watford; Mary died 1940 in Watford aged 79, and was buried 11 January, also in Vicarage Road Cemetery.

Sidney was born 24 March 1892 in either Bowes Park, Middx, or Tottenham, London, and baptised 15 June 1891 at the Chapelry of St Gabriel, Bowes Park.  He attended Callowland Board School, Watford, from 13 March 1899 to 23 March 1906.  He resided in Watford.

On the 1901 Census, aged 9 he lived in Watford, with his parents and seven siblings.  On the 1911 Census, a box maker aged 19, he still lived in Watford, with his widowed mother and five siblings.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Dover, Kent, and was formerly Private 2398 Royal Field Artillery and Private 16903 Royal West Kent Regiment.  He was entitled to the Victory and British War medals, and was killed in action.

Additional Information

There is a brief article about and a Death announcement for Sidney in the West Herts and Watford Observer dated 5 January 1918. Has a entry in the National Roll of the Great War. His brother Henry died 23 April 1917 and also features on Watford Borough Roll of Honour. Unfortunately, Sidney’s Service Record appears to be one that did not survive the World War Two bombing.
