Pre War

Son of the late Cox and Eliza Martha (nee FLEMING) AYERS; husband of Emily L AYERS.

His parents married 31 March 1889 at All Saints, Newington, London.  Cox died 1905 aged 44; Eliza died 1917 aged 52; both in the Southwark, London, district.  Cox was buried 25 August in Nunhead Cemetery, London.

Ernest was born 1899 in Walworth, London; his marriage is proving elusive.  He resided in Watford.

On the 1901 Census, aged 6 he lived in Newington, with his parents and three siblings.  On the 1911 Census, a newspaper messenger aged 16, he lived in Walworth, with his widowed mother and two siblings.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Camberwell, London, and was formerly Private 6251 Cambridgeshire Regiment.  He was entitled to the Victory and British War medals, and was presumed killed in action.

Additional Information

Unfortunately, Ernest’s Service Record appears to be one that did not survive the World War Two bombing.
