Richard John Soole Speller was born on 9 November 1896 in Bishop's Stortford to John and Florence Olive Speller and baptised on 29 December 1896 at St Michaels, Bishop's Stortford. (Soole was his mother's maiden name). The family lived at Rye Street, Bishop's Stortford on the 1901 Census but by 1911 his father had died in 1909 and he was living with his mother and three sisters at 85 Rye Street and working as a printers' errand boy.


Wartime Service

Richard served as a Private initially with the Hertfordshire Regiment under reg. no. 266755 and then the Labour Corps under Reg, Nos. 666664.


He died in on 27 October 1920 in Bishop's Stortford of "disease". (Detail from Pension Records).

Additional Information

His mother Florence, (who had remarried to William Snow in 1914), of 85 Rye Street, Bishop's Stortford claimed a pension of 5 shillings a week. Not recorded in the CWGC database.
