James EAMES was born on 12th January 1898, in London Colney, Hertfordshire, son of George Eames a Woodman and Caroline Eames (nee Fearne). One of their ten children.


George Eames Married Caroline Fearne (his second wife) on 15th November 1879, at the London Colney Chapel, London Colney, Herts. George had two children George and Selina Eames by his first wife Emma Childs who he married on 11th November 1871, at St Peters church, London Colney, Herts.


He was Baptised on 27th February 1898, at St Peters Church, London Colney, Herts.


1901 Census records James aged 3, living with his parents, half-brother George (28), half-sister Selina (25), sister Annie (17), brothers, William (14), Herbert (12), Edward (10), Charles (8) and Bertie (6) at Waterside, London Colney, Herts. His cousin Gladys Meikle (4) was living with the family, they had a boarder, Joseph Baddley (24), a Plumber.


His mother Caroline Eames died in 1903, aged 48.


1911 Census records James aged 13, living with his half-brother George and his wife Emma and their three children at “Montrose” Seaton Road, London Colney, Herts. 

Wartime Service

James enlisted at Bedford, posted to the Duke of Cambridges Own (Middlesex Regiment), issued with the service number G/42859. On completion of his training James was sent to the Western Front. James died on 11th October 1917, aged 19, from wounds received in action. He is buried in Dozinghem Military Cemetery in Belgium. Grave Ref: X. J. 10.

Additional Information

His effects of £4-14s-03, pay owing was split equally between his half-brother, half-sister, surviving brothers and sisters, his war gratuity of £3, went to his brother William.


Brother Private 2894 Edward Eames of the Hertfordshire Regiment Died of Wounds on 21st April 1916, aged 26.


Brother Private 4368 Bertie Ames of the Hertfordshire Regiment was Killed in Action on 13th November 1916, aged 21.


Brother Lance Corporal 14992 Charles Eames of the Bedfordshire Regiment was Killed in Action on 16th Aprill 1917, aged 24.


Brother Leading Mechanic F6864 William Eames served in the Royal Naval Air Service Later the Royal Air Force, survived the war.                                                                                                                       

Brother Petty Officer F5308 Herbert Eames served in the Royal Naval Air Service, later the Royal Air Force, Survived the war.
