William Thiele was born on 24th July 1869 in Bermuda to Charles Fredrick Alexander Thiele, a clerk at the Royal Naval Hospital, and Elizabeth Thiele. William was one of fourteen children.
The 1911 Census shows him at the regimental depot of the East Yorks Regiment, Victoria Barracks, Beverley, married to Mary Jane and with four children.
The Royal Hospital Chelsea Pensioner Soldier Service shows discharged from the Army on 18th July 1912.
The St Albans Roll of Honour gives his address as Springfield, Ely Road, The Camp, St Albans.
Wartime Service
Medal Roll shows arrived in Theatre of War 2B (Gallipoli) on 14/07/1915.
Presumed killed in action on 9th August 1915.
6th East Yorkshire Regiment were involved in heavy fighting around Scimitar Hill on 8th August. A full 32nd Brigade (3 battalions with another in reserve) attack was ordered on Tekke Tepe on the 8th August, but due to confusion and inept staff work, only the remnants of the 6th East Yorks moved forward. It seems likely that CSM Thiele was killed during this attack. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Helles Memorial.
Additional Information
CSM Thiele's son, also named William, joined the Australian Infantry in WW2 and was killed at Tobruk, Libya, on 18th May 1941. He was 30 years old and is buried in Tobruk War Cemetery.
