Cyril Hugh Trevor CALVERT was born on 17th January 1897, in Bangalore, Madras, India, son of Harry Campbell Calvert a serving soldier with the Royal Horse Artillery and Agnes Louisa Calvert (nee Morrison). One of their four Children. His parents were married on 5th January 1892 at St Andrews, Bangalore, Madras, India.
He was Baptised on 11th February 1897, at St Andrew’s, Bangalore, Madras, India.
His father Harry Calvert served in the South Africa-Second Boar War (1899 to 1902), then returned to the UK where he was discharged on completion of his service.
His father Harry remarried in October 1909, in St Albans, Herts, to Elizabeth Louisa Dalley.
1911 Census records Cyril aged 14, working as a Messenger Boy, living with his father Harry, Stepmother Elizabeth and younger sister Marjorie (11), at 9 Clarence Road, St Albans, Herts.
The family later moved to 105 Tooting Bec Road, Balham, S.W. 17.
Wartime Service
Cyril enlisted in Lewisham, on 19th September 1914, in the Royal Field Artillery (RFA), issued with the service No. 1060. On completion of his training, he embarked at Southampton on 3rd October 1915, disembarking at Le Havre, France, the following day the 4th October 1915.
He was posted to “D” Battery, 181st Brigade, RFA, on 26th June 1917, and issued with the new service No. 940310. He was Killed in Action on 9th October 1917, aged 20. He is buried in Fins new British Cemetery, Sorel-Le-Grand, France. Grave Ref: I. F. 15.
Additional Information
His effects of £11-06s-07d, pay Owing and his war gratuity of £13-10s-00d, went to his stepmother Elizabeth.
His father Harry was a life long soldier serving in India an South Africa.
