Wartime Service
Herbert enlisted in the Bedfordshire Regiment about Jun/July 1914 as Private 3/7443, the prefix 3 indicates he was inducted into the 3rd (Special Reserve) Battalion and also probably means that he had served previously, although no such Service was found.
Herbert went to France on 6 Oct 1914 with the 2nd Battalion of the Regiment .landing at Zeebrugge to aid in the Defence of Antwerp but were deployed to cover the retreat after Antwerp had fallen. They moved to Ypres taking part in the Actions at Langemarck (21-24 Oct 1914) and Gheluvelt (29-31 Oct) In 1915 the Battalion were involved in the Battle of Neuve Chapelle (1-13 may 1915), Aubers Ridge (9 May) and Festubert 16-23 May 1915). During this last action Herbert was killed in action on 16 May 1915. His remains were not recovered and he is remembered on Le Touret Memorial, Pas de Calais
