Biography
Alfred Stevens was listed in the Absent Voter Records for Abbots Langley in Autumn 1918. He was initially identified from the Absent Voter Records and was not recorded elsewhere in the Abbots Langley Parish records. In the Absent Voter Records Alfred was listed serving with the Army Service Corps (ASC) and his address was given at Abbots Road, Abbots Langley.
Alfred was born in the spring of 1898 at Tottenham. He was the only child of Alfred (senior) and Florence Stevens. In the 1901 Census the family was recorded living at Hallowell Road, Ruislip. Alfred (senior) worked as a Gauger (sic) and Valuer (sic) of Wine. By the time of the 1911 Census the family had moved to “St Issells” at Watford Heath, and Alfred (senior) gave his occupation as Wine Merchant. In each Census the family employed a General Domestic Servant.
It is not known when Alfred (junior) enlisted to the Army Service Corps, however his Medal Roll indicated that he was discharged on 13th February 1919, being “No longer physically fit for War service”. He returned to an address at Abbots Road, Abbots Langley. It is presumed that his parents had moved to this address at some point between 1911 and 1919.
Alfred Stevens survived the War.
