Biography

Ernest Swallow was born in the autumn of 1896 at Abbots Langley. He was one of eight children (six sons and two daughters) born to Thomas and Mary Swallow. His brother, Thomas, also served in the Great War. At the time of the 1901 Census the family lived at Asylum Road, Abbots Langley. Thomas was employed as a Coachman at the Asylum.

Ernest was first recorded in the Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour in March 1915, serving with the Bedfordshire Regiment. In June 1915 Ernest was recorded serving with the 4th Battalion of the Bedfordshire’s, but by the end of the War had transferred to the 5th Battalion.

Ernest Swallow survived the War, as did his brother Thomas.
