Biography
Alfred Smith was born in 1883 at Bushey. He was one of seven children (six sons and one daughter) born to James and Lydia Smith. At the time of the 1891 Census the family lived at Porridge Pot Hill, Bedmond, where James worked as a Gardener.
By 1901 Alfred had left the family home and was listed in the Census of that year living at Hampstead and working as a Cartman.
In the summer of 1911 Alfred married Elizabeth How at Romford. At the time he was living as a Boarder at the Police Station, Ripple Road, Barking where he was employed as a Police Constable.
Alfred was recorded for the first time in the Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour in February 1918, serving with the Royal Marine Light Infantry (RMLI). He continued to serve with the RMLI through to the end of the War.
Alfred Smith survived the War.
