Biography
Joseph Hunt was recorded in the Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour for the first time in December 1914, serving with the Royal Navy aboard HMS “St Vincent”, a Dreadnought Class battleship within the First Battle Squadron, based in Home Waters. In the March 1915 edition of the Parish Magazine Joseph was recorded serving aboard HMS “Superb”, a battleship included in the Fourth Battle Squadron, based at Scapa Flow in the Orkney Islands. The Parish Magazine recorded Joseph serving aboard HMS “Superb” until January 1917, which would have indicated that he served with the battleship at the Battle of Jutland on 31st May 1916.
In January 1917 Joseph was listed serving aboard HMS “Serpent”, a Depot Ship.
No other records have been found about this man, and it is presumed that as he was recorded serving in the Navy from 1914, that he might have been serving in the Royal Navy from before the start of the War, and thus not living at home in the area during the various Censuses. However someone locally was providing information about his service record to the compilers of the Parish Roll of Honour.
It is presumed that Joseph Hunt survived the War.
