Biography

William Hook was born at Attleborough in Norfolk in 1882. He was married in 1909 and moved with his wife, Edith to Abbots Langley some time in 1910. Their son William (junior) was born at Abbots Langley in 1910. In the 1911 Census the family lived in Garden Road, and William worked as a Groom.

The Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour first recorded William in December 1915, and indicated that he was serving with a Remount Depot. He was recorded with the Army Service Remount service for the remainder of the War.

At the outbreak of War in August 1914 there were four Remount Depots in the UK. Remount Depots sourced, obtained and then trained horses and mules for the Army, and William’s experience working as a Groom would have set him in good stead to join the Remount service. As the War progressed four more Depots were established in England, six were set up in France and others in Egypt and Salonika. It is not known where William was deployed.

William was recorded in the Absent Voter Records for Autumn 1918 and Spring 1919, serving with the Army Service Corps (ASC) Remount Depot, and his address was given at 26 Adrian Road, Abbots Langley.

William Hook survived the War.
