Biography

George Dowse was recorded in the National Roll of The Great War, serving with the Royal Air Force as an Air Mechanic.. He joined the Royal Naval Air Service in 1917, and after his training he worked as an aero engine fitter at several Air Stations. The National Roll noted that his work demanded a high degree of technical skill, and that he carried out his work in a most efficient manner but was unsuccessful in obtaining transfer overseas before the cessation of hostilities. He was demobilised to 90 Breakspeare Road late in 1918.

He was first listed in the Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour in May 1918, serving with the Royal Air Force. The RAF had been formed in April 1918 and incorporated the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service.

George was born in the summer of 1883 at Nash Mills, Abbots Langley. He was the youngest of three sons born to Alfred and Florence (Fanny) Dowse. In the 1901 Census the family lived at Lock House, Apsley End, and Alfred worked as a Milkman, and George as a Painter. The 1911 Census showed that the family had moved to 25 Breakspeare Road, Abbots Langley. George, still a single man, worked as a Carpenter.

George survived the War, and was related to the many members of the Dowse family who served during the Great War.
