Biography
Leonard Healing was born in the summer of 1884 at Abbots Langley. In the 1901 Census he was recorded living at Bedmond with his parents, Henry and Elizabeth Healing, his brother Frank and sister Beatrice, and a cousin, an uncle and a lodger. Henry Healing worked as a Horseman on a Farm. Leonard’s brother, Frank also served in the Great War.
On 11th December 1915 Leonard attested. At that time he was living at the Bedmond Road, and was working as a Labourer. He was posted to the Army Reserve on 12th December, and was mobilised on 2nd April 1916. On 25th April he was posted to the Royal Field Artillery (RFA), and the next day joined at Woolwich.
The Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour first listed Leonard in June 1916, but at that point did not record his unit. It was not until the next month that he was listed serving with the RFA. Leonard’s Service Record noted that he went to France on 20th July 1916, and served with a number of RFA units throughout 1916 and 1917. He was granted leave to England between 24th May and 3rd June 1917, and returned to England again between 25th July and 8th August 1918 in order to marry Emma Morton on 3rd August.
He returned to France and was wounded on 5th October 1918. He was admitted to Hospital with a gun-shot wound, and returned to England on 14th January 1919, where he was sent to a hospital in Perth. He continued to recover until 11th April, and was sent to a Dispersal Unit on 25th April, before being demobilised on 24th May 1919 at Woolwich, and returned to an address at Queen’s Street, Chipperfield.
Leonard survived the War, as did his brother Frank.
