Biography
William Ellwood was one of four children born to Thomas and Mary Ellwood. He was born in Abbots Langley in the autumn of 1889. By 1911 his father had died and he lived with his mother and sister at Trowley Bottom, and worked as an Assistant Baker.
He was first listed in the Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour in July 1916, however his unit was not given until the following month when he was recorded serving with the 5th Bedfordshire’s. When he enlisted William worked as an Assistant Baker at the Leavesden Asylum., and by this time had married. At some point in 1917 he transferred to the Army Service Corps, and was recorded with this unit in each of the Absent Voter Records in Autumn 1918, Spring and Autumn 1919, and his address was given at Trowley Bottom.
William survived the War.
