Biography

William Crewe was born in London on 3rd April 1903, and by 1911 was living at 20 Marlin Square, Abbots Langley with his parents, Francis and Caroline Crewe, and his sister Nellie. Francis Crewe was employed as a Cook at Leavesden Asylum.

The UK Royal Navy Register of Seamen’s Services noted that William first served aboard HMS “Inconstant” on 16th July 1918. HMS “Inconstant” was one of two ships that comprised HMS “Impregnable”, a training establishment for boys at Devonport. The other ship was HMS “Howe”. When William joined the Royal Navy he gave his occupation as a Factory Hand. He remained at Devonport until 2nd November 1918, at which point he was transferred to HMS “Ganges”, a shore-based training establishment at Shotley, near Harwich. William remained in the Royal Navy after the War, last serving aboard HMS “Cyclops”, a submarine Depot Ship, on 7th April 1928.

William Crewe survived the War.
