Biography

Arthur Burrage was born at Abbots Langley in the spring of 1879. He was one of three sons and two daughters of John and Elizabeth Burrage. Arthur’s elder brother Carey also served in the Great War. Another brother, Ernest emigrated to Australia on 10th November 1908. In 1891 the family lived near Toms Lane, however by the 1911 Census they lived in Abbots Road, Abbots Langley. John’s trade was a Carpenter in 1881, but by 1891 he worked as a Builder, and continued this mode of employment until 1911. In the 1911 Census Arthur’s occupation was listed as a Carpenter.

Arthur was first identified in the Absent Voter Records for Abbots Langley. Although his brother Carey was listed in the Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour, Arthur was not, and does not appear in any other of the Parish records. He was listed in the Absent Voter Records for Autumn 1918 and Spring 1919, however no details were given for his rank or service unit, but the records confirmed that his home address was at Abbots Road, Abbots Langley. It is not known when Arthur joined up however it may have been very late in the War, and too late to be included in the Parish Roll of Honour.

Arthur Burrage and his brother Carey both survived the War.
