Biography

Charles Bennett was born in India in 1881, and in the 1911 Census it was shown that he worked as a Farm Labourer. He was one of eleven children born to Charles and Anne Marie Bennett. In 1901 Charles (senior) was employed as a Gate Porter at the Asylum, but by the time of the 1911 Census he gave his occupation as “Retired Night Porter”. The family lived in Garden Road, Abbots Langley. Two of Charles’ brothers, Albert and Frederick also served during the Great War.

The Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour recorded Charles for the first time in September 1916, serving with the Royal Engineers. He was recorded with the Royal Engineers throughout the rest of the War.

Charles’ Service Records have not survived and little more is known about his time in the Services. Albert, Frederick and Charles all survived the War.
