Biography

Albert Bryant’s name appears for the first time in the Parish Roll of Honour listed in the Abbots Langley Parish Magazine in May 1915. He was shown serving with the Army Service Corps (ASC), however was not listed in the following month’s Magazine. He re-appeared in July 1916, again serving with the ASC, and was recorded each month until December 1916, but from then through to December 1918, when the final Roll of Honour was published, he was absent.

Albert has not been identified in the Census or Absent Voter Records for the local area, and his irregular appearance in the Parish Roll of Honour cannot be explained. Three other members of the Bryant family were recorded – George, Percy and Walter. In the 1911 Census the family was recorded living at “Hudscus Cottages”, Porridge Hill, Bedmond. One of the sons, Walter, emigrated to New Zealand, and returned to serve with the New Zealand Contingent. Maybe Albert was a member of this family, and had moved from the area, or maybe he was a cousin or uncle living elsewhere in the country.

It is assumed that Albert John Bryant survived the War, as he is not recorded in the Commonwealth War Graves Commission lists for those who died in the War.
