Biography

Ernest John Barnes was born on 23rd February 1891 at Abbots Langley. He was one of five children, three sons and two daughters, born to John and Julia Barnes. Ernest’s brother William also served in the Great War. The family lived at Breakspeare Road, Abbots Langley at the time of the 1901 Census. John, who had previously worked as a Labourer was listed as a Gardener Domestic.

By the time of the 1911 Census Ernest had moved from the family home. His name was first recorded in the Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour in October 1914, and he was shown serving with the Bedfordshire Regiment. An E. Barnes was recorded in the Leavesden Asylum Roll of Honour which was published in the Hertfordshire Advertiser on 17th October 1914, and this was Ernest who was working as a Farm Labourer at the Asylum when he enlisted.

In December 1914 the Abbots Langley Parish Roll of Honour indicated that Ernest had been transferred to the 4th Battalion of the Bedfordshire Regiment. He remained with this unit throughout 1915, and in December of that year it was recorded in the Parish Roll of Honour that he was then serving with the 1st Battalion of the Bedfordshire Regiment.

Ernest continued to serve with the 1st Bedfordshire’s throughout the rest of the War.

Ernest John Barnes survived the War, as did his brother William, and cousins James, Frederick, and John and uncle Ernest William, who was Discharged Disabled.
