Biography

Charles Wray was recorded in the Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour in September 1914, serving with the Bedfordshire Regiment. By April 1915 he was listed with the 1st Battalion of the Bedfordshire Regiment, and remained with that unit throughout the remainder of the War.

His Medal Roll card noted that he arrived in France on 16th August 1914, and would have been in one of the first units of the British Expeditionary Force to land in France in August 1914. This indicated that Charles Wray was a regular soldier at the start of the War.

The 1st Battalion of the Bedfordshire Regiment was stationed in Ireland when War was declared on 4th August 1914. The battalion mobilised between 5th and 14th August and sailed from Belfast on 15th August on the SS “Oronsa”, arriving at Le Harve the next day. The battalion was then rushed to the Front and saw action in the Battle of Mons on 23rd August.

Charles Wray served with the Bedfordshire’s throughout the War, and was demobilised on 6th February 1920.

Charles Wray survived the War.
