Biography

Charles Thatcher was born in the summer of 1896 at Abbots Langley. He was one of four children (three sons and one daughter) born to Frank and Eliza Burton. Charles’ two brothers, Frank and Edward also served in the Great War. At the time of the 1901 Census the family lived at 8 Adrian Road. Frank worked as a House Painter and Paper Hanger. The family remained at this address and were recorded there in the 1911 Census, where Charles was listed working as a Telegraph Messenger.

The Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour first recorded Charles in June 1915 serving with the Hertfordshire Royal Field Artillery (RFA). In the January 1918 Roll of Honour indicated that Charles served with the RFA, and would probably have been posted to various batteries throughout this period.

Charles was listed in the Absent Voter Records of Autumn 1918 and Spring 1919 serving with the 270th Battery of the RFA. He gave his address at 8 Adrian Road, Abbots Langley.

Charles Thatcher survived the War, as did his brothers Frank and Edward.
