John Terry was born in the summer of 1883 at Abbots Langley. He was one of six children (four boys and two girls) in the family of John Terry (senior) and Jane Lunnon. His brother, Humphrey also served in the Great War. Jane was John’s second wife, and the couple married in September 1882. Jane had a son and a daughter from her previous marriage, and including John, the couple had another four children. In the 1891 and 1901 Census the family was recorded living at Breakspear Road, Abbots Langley. John (senior) worked as a Hurdle Maker and John (junior) worked as an Apprentice Carpenter. In the 1911 Census the family was recorded living at 68 Marlin Square, Abbots Langley, however John (junior) had married in 1904, and in 1911 was living with his wife and four children at Breakspear Road, Abbots Langley, and was employed as a Carpenter.

John was first recorded in the Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour in May 1916, serving with the Royal Engineers. At some point later John was transferred to the 19th Battalion of the Welsh Regiment, and he was listed with this unit in the Parish Roll of Honour through to the final Roll of Honour in December 1918. John was listed in the Autumn 1918 and Spring 1919 Absent Voter Records, serving as a Sapper with the 13th Battalion of the Welsh Regiment and his address was given at 35 Breakspear Road, Abbots Langley.

John Terry survived the War, as did his brother Humphrey. His cousins Harold and Ernest Terry and Daniel Wilson all survived the War and Harold and Ernest were commemorated in the Leavesden Roll of Honour.
