Biography

Baptised Joseph Smith, but known as James was born in the winter of 1878 at Debenham, Suffolk. He was one of four children (two sons and two daughters) born to Samuel and Rebecca Smith. The family lived at “The Street”, Debenham in Suffolk. Samuel Smith worked as a Carrier.

By the time of the 1901 Census James had married and he was employed by the Metropolitan Asylum Board at the Leavesden Asylum as an Attendant. He lived with his wife at Tanners Hill Cottages, Tanners Hill, Abbots Langley. At the time of the 1911 Census the family lived at 21 Marlin Square, Abbots Langley. James continued to work at the Asylum.

James was first recorded in the Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour in July 1916, serving with the Royal Garrison Artillery (RGA). In the November 1917 Parish Magazine it was reported that James had been wounded, and in July 1918 the Magazine reported that he had been Discharged Disabled.

James was recorded in the Autumn 1918 Absent Voter List, serving as a Gunner with 13 Company RGA. His address was given at 21 Marlin Square, Abbots Langley.

James Smith survived the War.
