Biography
Thomas Simmons was born on 3rd September 1893 at Watford. He was one of six children (four sons and two daughters) born to Thomas (senior) and Ellen Simmons. At the time of the 1901 Census the family lived in Watford, where Thomas (senior) worked as a Master Carman. The 1911Census recorded that Thomas (junior) was working as a Clerk to a Carman, and the family lived at 28 Market Street, Watford.
The Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour first recorded Thomas (junior) in November 1914, serving with the Worcestershire Regiment. In October 1916 the Parish Magazine noted that he had been reported wounded.
Thomas married Violet Prentice, at Watford in January 1917. He was regularly recorded in the Parish Roll of Honour serving with the Worcestershire Regiment until the end of the War.
In the October 1916 the Leavesden Parish Magazine noted that Thomas Simmons, formerly an Attendant at the Leavesden Asylum, had been awarded the Military Medal, however this was not recorded in the Abbots Langley records until it appeared in the Parish Magazine in January 1919.
“The award of the Military Medal to Thomas Herbert Simmons should have been announced in previous Magazines”
It is not known when Thomas was awarded the medal. Thomas’ Medal Roll indicated that he also served with the Labour Corps, and this may have been following his wounding. Thomas was listed in the Absent Voter Records for Autumn 1918, serving with the 17th Garrison Battalion of the Worcestershire Regiment. At the time his address was given at 36 Marlin Square, Abbots Langley. It is not known when he moved to Abbots Langley, but presumably from 1914 or before, from when he was recorded in the Parish Roll of Honour.
From family records it is noted that after the War Thomas became the Mayor of Watford.
Thomas Simmons survived the War.
