Biography

John Sadler was born on 4th January 1893 at Haringey. He was one of four children (two sons and two daughters) born to Geoffrey and Rosa Sadler. At the time of the 1901 Census the family lived at 42 Bergholt Road, Hackney. Geoffrey was listed in the Census as Director of a Lead Manufacturing Company. By 1911 the family had moved and lived at 31 Oxhey Road, Watford. John worked as a Bank Clerk.

John was recorded for the first time in the Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour in October 1915 serving as a Flight Sub Lieutenant with the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS). John qualified for his Royal Aero Club Aviator’s Certificate at the Grahame White School at Hendon on 7th November 1915 where the picture above was taken. At that time he gave his address at “Woodville”, Hempstead Road, Watford.

John was promoted to Lieutenant at some point before January 1917, and served with the RNAS until April 1918 when the new Royal Air Force came into being.

John Sadler survived the War, as did his brother Geoffrey. Two of his cousins, David and Kendal both survived the War, however his third cousin, William, was killed in action at Hill 60 near Ypres in April 1915.
