Biography
Charles Ridgway was born in the spring of 1880 at Eastbourne. However in the 1881 Census he was recorded living with his grand-father, Jonah Atkins, and his wife and four children, at Breakspear Road, Abbots Langley. Jonah worked as a Hay and Straw Merchant. It is not known how or why he came to live in Abbots Langley, or what happened to his parents. Charles was still living with his grand-parents in Breakspeare Road in 1891, but by 1901 he lived at the Asylum, where he was employed as an Attendant.
Charles married in 1902 and at the time of the 1911 Census lived at 2 Garden Road, Abbots Langley, with his Wife, Annie, and three children.
His Medal Roll noted that Charles enlisted on 26th May 1915, and later was sent to France. In June 1915 the Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour recorded that Charles was serving with the Army Veterinary Corps. He continued to serve with the Royal Army Veterinary Corps (RAVC) throughout the War, and gained promotion to the ranks of Corporal Acting Sergeant and eventually Sergeant.
Charles was listed in the Absent Voter Records of Autumn 1918, Spring 1919 and Autumn1918, each time serving with the RAVC at the Headquarters of the 124th Infantry Brigade, and his address was given at 33 Breakspeare Road, Abbots Langley.
Charles Ridgway survived the War.
