Biography
Maurice Roffey was listed in the Absent Voter Records for Abbots Langley in Autumn 1918 and Spring 1919. He was initially identified from the Absent Voter Records and was not recorded elsewhere in the Abbots Langley Parish records. In the Absent Voter Records Maurice was listed serving with the 346th Company of the Motor Transport Section of the Army Service Corps and his address was given at Hazelwood Lodge, Abbots Langley.
Maurice was born in the autumn of 1880 at Lingfield, Surrey. He was one of six children born to Harry and Hannah Roffey. In 1881 the family lived at “The School-house”, Lingfield. Harry Roffey worked as an Agricultural Labourer. By 1891 the family had moved to Bletchingley, where they lived at South Park Cottage. Harry continued to be listed working as an Agricultural Labourer.
At the time of the 1901 Census the family lived at “The Green”, West Wickham. Harry worked as a Carter on a Farm, and by this time Maurice had started working as a Bricklayer/Labourer.
By 1911 Maurice had moved from the family home and was living with his brother, Harry, and his wife and two children at 6 Halifax Street, Sydenham in south-east London. Maurice was employed as a Chauffeur Domestic, and it was maybe through his driving skills that he joined the Motor Transport Section of the Army Service Corps – skills gained through employment as a Chauffeur at Hazelwood Lodge, Abbots Langley.
In the Absent Voter Records Maurice was listed with the rank of Private, however in his Medal Roll it was identified that by the end of his period of Service he had attained the rank of Sergeant.
Maurice Roffey survived the War.
